Cabins on Mariner are more stylish and family entertainment is somewhat more impressive, but prices can be a little bit higher on Royal Caribbean’s cruise liner. The lifeboat configuration of Carnival Magic differs from that of her sister ship, Carnival Dream, in that Carnival Magic has 18 double-size lifeboats, while Carnival Dream has 30 smaller boats. Carnival Magic also has a large, highly visible SkyCourse ropes course forward of her funnel that is not present on her sister.

Keeping with the times, Carnival Magic features the delicious good times of Guy's Burger Joint™, BlueIguana Cantina™, Alchemy Bar® and RedFrog Rum Bar®. Carnival Magic was the second Dream-class vessel in the row of four, in 2011, and is the overall smallest ship among the class, though not by much. (The ship weighs in at only 4 GT less than Carnival Breeze.) Since the ship isn’t that old, it’s only received one dry docking phase, in 2016, which simply upgraded a few public areas. Carnival Magic was launched in 2011, but even a decade later, this ship still has its, well, magic.

Within SportSquare is SkyCourse, which was also a first when it debuted on the ship. The cruise ship’s ropes course is popular with adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers, as it takes you through some difficult ropes challenges high above the ship’s deck and the water. If you want to book a special dining experience, you can reserve your spot at The Chef’s Table, where the ship’s executive chef hosts and treats you to private and behind-the-scenes tidbits and looks at what goes on behind the curtain.

The first new venue was an overnight success from its first sailing. Located on deck 5, the RedFrog has both indoor and outdoor seating for 120 guests. Its theme is a mixture of the Caribbean and Key West, with palm trees and decor straight out of a beach bar. Although the inaugural sailing was in the Mediterranean, this laid-back cruise ship definitely has a Caribbean feel. The RedFrog serves Caribbean-themed pub snacks such as coconut shrimp, chicken wings, Bahamian conch salad, and fried grouper fingers. The pub also has live music that fits the Caribbean theme and a wide selection of island beers, frozen libations, and rum drinks.

Carnival has kept many of its guests' favorite venues on the new Carnival Magic, but also added some new ones that are sure to please its thousands of mainstream North American guests. Although the ship is primarily marketed to North America, we had an international group of guests on our Mediterranean cruise, including about 600 Russians. They all seemed to be having a great time, and it's fun to interact with people from different cultures and countries on a cruise ship. Circling the entire area is an eighth-mile jogging track with great views of the sea and all the people enjoying the SportSquare activities. A full bar with a large flat-screen display is available for those who just want to relax and check out the sports action in the area or on TV. Carnival still has its classic alternative Prime Steakhouse on the Carnival Magic.

Embracing modern technology, the Carnival Magic has dozens of "Fun Hubs" of computers scattered throughout the ship. The Fun Hub is a social network and shipboard Intranet portal that provides access to a variety of information on Carnival Magic's services, facilities, and daily activities. Carnival Magic also offers cell phone service and bow-to-stern WiFi, so those bringing along their own computers can access the Fun Hub and surf the Web from their own cabin or common area on the ship. Meals at Cucina del Capitano are casual and fun, featuring homemade pasta and other Italian specialties. Some recipes come straight from the Captains' (or their wives') kitchens.
Awkward for strangers, yes, but possibly even more awkward for couples traveling together. Storage is more than adequate, with plenty of drawers and spacious closets (remember, it's the tropics so you aren't packing a ton of clothes). There's a wide window ledge in balcony cabins so the person on that side of the bed can use that for essentials as well. Each bed has a night table and there's a wide sofa and table facing the mirror.
The cabins in this category are cheaper than a regular balcony cabin and are a good choice for those who like privacy and who don't mind some sea spray. Conversely, balcony cabins on Deck 6 will be directly above the promenade deck and will hear noise from the bars at night and restaurant venues during the day. Carnival has made excellent use of the space over the Lido Marketplace, adding an Italian family-style dining venue called Cucina del Capitano ("The Captain's Kitchen"). This traditional Italian restaurant, with its red and white checked tablecloths and kegs of Chianti, pays homage to Carnival's Italian heritage. Past Carnival cruisers already know that all of the line's captains are Italian and many Carnival ships, including the Carnival Magic, were built in Italy. The menu consists of made-to-order Italian favorites developed by the cruise line's executive chef and four chefs de cuisine who spent three weeks in Italy researching and eating with some of Italy's finest chefs and their families.
